Membership details (in Self-Help Group, Producers Cooperative / Company, Cooperative Society etc.) Tapendra Mahto was the founder of Vivekananda Seva Sangh Organisation in his village. He worked as president of village for several years. Now the organisation is working well for the development of village under supervision of Divyayan Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, Morabadi. Presently he is a member of the organisation.
Brief about individual/ group (about 250 words) Sri Tapendra Mahto aged 38 years is the resident of a small beautiful village besides hilly areas of Ranchi situated in Ramgarh district. He has one small brother and two sisters. Sisters are already married and living happily, with their family. Tapendra Mahto was having a land of more than 10 acres area , but he along with his father were able to grow only upland paddy and sweet potato on this land . Growing only two crops annually by traditional method does not provided sufficient income for leading a family of 6 members. So, his family was suffering from financial crisis. He has completed his education up to Intermediate, but the critical situation of family compelled him to drop out education and face the battlefield of life. In this situation, Tapendra heard about Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama and KVK Training Programmes. He got linked with it and received training from kvk . Intervention of KVK, his personal efforts strong determination and hard labour guided him to choose right path and ultimately he became able to fetch more income from farming and animals husbandry Sector which transformed his life fully.
Write up on of success story (about 500 words) PREVIOUS STATUS OF FARMER : Few years back, Shri Tapendra Mahto was a traditional farmer, who could not continue his education due to financial problems of family. He was practicing farming and animals rearing work only by the traditional knowledge which he learned from his father and villagers. The income earned was very meagre and not sufficient for the family.

TRANSFORMATION IN LIFE : Tapendra came to know about activities of Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama and KVK training programmes. He decided to take training from kvk, rushed with his friends to Ranchi and got enrolled in regular training programme of KVK in 2010 on Integrated Agriculture, which motivated him to know more about animal husbandry. He assessed the demand of animal’s products in the market and scope of income generation from this sector during training programme.

KVK INTERVENTION : After getting suggestions from the KVK scientists, he decided to take special training in animal’s husbandry and artificial insemination. He was given 3 months training in animal husbandry and 45 days training in artificial insemination, which enriched his knowledge about this sector. He learned skills related to animal’s rearing and with changed attitude, he planned to start pig farming along with crop production and milch animals rearing, which he was doing earlier. He was also provided with Nitrogen container and other equipments for AI work.

SUCCESSFUL VENTURE : Tapendra Mahto learned while training pig farming is more economical and feasible than any other kind of live stock. Hence seeing the market potential and to use his deserted land, he started a semi potential piggery unit with 10 pigs. Besides that he purchased with 30 dual purpose poultry birds and 30 ducks for making full use of all human and non human resources he had in getting more income.
By efforts of KVK Scientists and approach of a local minister, he managed to take a loan of 6 lakhs from bank. Fortunately, Under Piggery Development Scheme of Animal Husbandry Department he availed a Subsidy amount of 4 lakh 20 thousand, which he used in initial expenditure of making piggery shed, equipped with boring for water supply and other facilities.
Gradually, He increased no. of pigs in the farm. Presently, he is having a scientific, Semi intensive Pig farm having 20 female 4 male pigs with 60 piglets. He engaged two workers in this farm on daily payment basis.
The fertility of the females were appreciable and in one furrowing of a sow(female pig) minimum 6-8 piglets obtained which come to a marketable age at about 7 months. He is getting an average income of Rs 10,000-12,000 per month from his pig farm.
By using the technologies of seintific farming he is now growing more than two crops in a year i.e vegetables groundnut etc. Whole family of Tapendra is engaged in looking after his two buffaloes, Poultry and Pig farm. Tapendra besides coordinating the farm management activities is also working as ‘Pashu-Mitra’ in linkage with Block animal husbandry department. He is earning about Rs 15000/ month by treatment of animals and AI work . By getting an income of Rs 30,000/- month from all sources, he got appreciation and respect in society. He started his education again and he is doing his graduation. He purchased a Tata magic auto and a motor cycle for convenience in transportation of produces to the market.
His family also started business of a small tent house.
He is now a self reliant farmer and very-very obliged to Ashrama and KVK for making great transformation in his life.
Factors responsible for success (e.g., individual efforts, leadership qualities, innovativeness, and support form Govt. Department, responsiveness to change etc.) Individual efforts, responsiveness to change and support from Divyayan KVK.
Impact of success story on other farmers in locality He motivated 3-4 boys of his village to participate in training programmes of KVK and be self-reliant like him. They have started their work as per his suggestion.

Scientific Dairy Farming : A Successful Venture

Theme of the success story: Animal Husbandry

Name of Farmer Sri Falindra Mahto
Village Hesalpiri
Address P.O.- Soba, Block- Burmu, Ranchi
Contact details (Phone, mobile, email Id) Mobile No - 9709223209, 7766962021, 8521823567
Landholding (in ha.) 0.6 Hectare
Irrigated (in ha.) 0.3 Hectare
Un-irrigated (in ha.) 0.3 hectare
Membership details (in Self-Help Group, Producers Cooperative/ Company, Cooperative Society etc.) Member of Vivekananda Seva Sangh, a village level voluntary organisation working for all round development of villages.
Brief about individual/ group (about 250 words) Falindra Mahto lives in a small village Hesalpiri. Hesalpiri village is situated in Burmu Block of Ranchi district. The village is having good connection with nearby towns/ cities through Pucca road. Farmers residing in village are mainly small and marginal farmers but have a progressive trend. The village has a local organisation named Vivekananda Seva Sangan through which it is working for development of Village under guidance of Divyayan Krishi Vigyan Kendra and Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama. His father’s name is Sri Jaleshwar Mahto and mother is Smt. Mani Devi. He has a small family of six members. He has two brothers and one sister. Sister is happily married in a well off family. Brothers are working with him in dairy Farm, go for collection of milk and work on their small agricultural farm. Although Falindra is youngest among all brothers but he was bestowed with the responsibility of supporting his family from very young age. He couldn’t finish his education after Intermediate due to these responsibilities.
Sometimes whole family has to work as waged labourers for survival of their family. His father could manage to make only meagre income from his small farm of less than 2 acres agriculture land. In this situation animal husbandry which they were doing since last 6 years was the only sector where there was scope for fetching more income. Understanding this fact Mr. Falindara learned about Scientific Dairy Farming from KVK and did it successfully which transformed his life fully from a deprived, traditional farmer to a progressive successful farmer.
His brothers always cooperated him in his work and now the whole family is earning through agricultural activities, mainly through dairy farming. They are now serving for the Development of village also through Vivekanand Seva Sangh (a village level organization formed by Divyayan KVK ex-trainees).
Write up on of success story (about 500 words) Previous Status : Sri Falindra Mahto belongs to the group of small farmers. The income from the Agricultural form was not enough for survival of the family so, from the very early age he was struggling to earn money by doing farming on small piece of land and dairy farming. After continuing efforts for more than 2 years he could not succeed to earn more by traditional methods. His family income was only Rs6000/ month. By this meagre amount it was difficult to fulfil the needs of all family members (6 members) the income was also not regular because his land was not irrigated and cows were not in milk production for the whole year.

Transforming Life : Due to effects of adverse climate conditions on crop production and increasing input cost, there is growing awareness on significant role of animal husbandry for addressing such problems. Although our country has large populations of livestock, the productivity of milk and other livestock’s per animals is very low.
Reasons behind low productivity were the same with the farmers of that village also i.e.- poor management of Dairy farm, faulty feeding of animals , poor breed etc.

Scientific Intervention of KVK : During regular follow up programmes of KVK, Falindra met with the animals’ husbandry scientist and was suggested to attend the training programme of KVK on Dairy farming and Artificial insemination. In 2010, he participated in 3 months training programme on Dairy farming and artificial insemination organised by KVK, Ranchi He received strong motivation and learned skills of farm management and artificial insemination. By his own interest and KVK training programme he also learned about treatment of common ailments of animals, vaccination skills etc. After training he was provided with Nitrogen container and required equipments for AI to start private veterinary practice.

Dreams Come True : When he returned to his village he started managing his Dairy Farm in Scientific way. His brothers also supported him in this work. He was getting only 3-5 Kg milk, previously, which was increased up to 10-12 Kg daily. He started collecting milk from nearby villages also for sell to Sudha milk co-operatives society and in Ranchi city. Gradually, he started selling about 60 Kg milk/day by his own production and collection from other farmers. He was working under regular supervision of the scientists. Now, he is doing private veterinary practice/ animals health care services and door to door artificial insemination services for his supplementary income.
Getting income from all sources the purchased more Cross-bred cows. Now Mr. Falindra and his family are maintaining a dairy farm of 6 adult cows and two buffaloes with their calves.
With wise management of farm he ensures that six animals remain in production throughout the year. He is getting about 25-30 litres milk daily. Additional income helped him to make a permanent shed for cows with sufficient space for each animal. With all efforts he managed to earn an average income of about 45,000 per month which is shared by three brothers.
He has constructed a nice building for his family. His family is also enjoying a good socio-economic status in the village leading a comfortable life.
His whole family feels indebted to Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, Divyayan Krishi Vigyan Kendra for bringing happiness and change in their life. Mr Falindra has now become a role model for a number of unemployed youth by getting about Rs15000-20000 income per month; many farmers like Mr. Falindra in Ranchi district are working under guidance of KVK scientist and learning from KVK’S a training programme continuously which is also helpful in attracting and retaining rural youth in agriculture and animal husbandry and thus reducing migration rate.
Factors responsible for success (e.g., individual efforts, leadership qualities, innovativeness, and support form Govt. Department, responsiveness to change etc.) Individual efforts, responsiveness to change and support from Divyayan KVK.
Impact of success story on other farmers in locality 8-10 boys from the village took part in training programmes of KVK and working in his guidance in dairy farming .he often works as resource person in kvk training programmes.

Brief about individual/ group (about 250 words) Sri Birsa Oreya son of Sri Sushil Oreya, a resource poor farmer, is a 26 years old young farmer having 7 members in his family. He has 4 brothers and one Sister. Born in a poor family of very remote naxalite affected village, he could not take much education. Being distressed from his bad economic situation, he was looking for a job as well as working as daily wages labour to barely earn food for his family member. Mean while Scientists of Divyayan Krishi Vigyayan Kendra, Ranchi visited to his village and motivated him to join one month training programme on off season vegetable cultivation, which was being organised in his village by Divyayan Krishi Vigyayan Kendra, Ranchi. After completion of training, Mr. Oreya joined Vivekananda Seva Sangh and self help group, a village level organisation formed by Divyayan KVK, Ranchi. Regular visit of KVK Scientists motivated him for earning money by putting his efforts in agriculture/ Horticulture. He is working as resource person for Divyayan Krishi Vigyan Kendra in village level training programme and having 4 year experience in the field of agriculture & horticulture. At the same time he runs and monitors a Self Help Groups in his village Gutigara. He started growing vegetables namely French Beans, Tomato, Peas, Radish, Brinjal, Chilli & Green Leafy vegetables since 2012. Earlier they used to grow field crops like paddy, ragi, and jowar.
The area where Sri Birsa Oreya practices horticulture is predominantly a horticultural area. The yield of tomato which is realized, ranged from 250 – 275 q/ha is the highest in the nearby villages and is known for earliest supply of the tomato in khunti district market which fetches very good income from the market.
Write up on of success story Sri Birsa Oreya is a farmer of tribal dominant district Khunti and is working hard in his field for his family survival. But due to lack of resources and technical knowledge he is not getting the desirable output even with his sufficient land holding for his existence. Later on after the start of Akhandanada seva prakalp project of our institution, he came in contact of Divyayan Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Ranchi in the year 2011-12. KVK scientist provided training on vegetable cultivation and technical guidance to Sri Birsa Oreya with some financial assistance by Project. A package of technologies and seeds of improved varieties were provided for demonstrations by the Divyayan Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, Ramchi during the year 2012. After knowing about the technologies Mr. Birsa Oryen visited and interacted with Scientist of Divyayan Krishi Vigyan Kendra. He started growing improved and hybrid varieties of vegetable from 2012 and he is realizing continuously higher yields. Mr. Birsa Oryen was constantly in touch with KVK scientist and field level worker and as a follow up, scientist visited his field regularly. He has been provided with all the need based knowledge & skill, which included enrichment of fertilizer and pest management by scientists of Divyayan Krishi Vigyan Kendra. Mr. Birsa Oryen is hard working farmer and he is able to grasp the technologies faster and adopt it. He is actively involved in all day to day working of the farm and marketing. He is can now identify important insect pest of vegetables especially tomato, including fruit borer and their management practices. During his visit to KVK he came to know about the off season vegetable. He now prefers to grow off season vegetables because of their higher price in market. For enrichment of soil he started using compost, organic liquid fertilizer, bio-fertilizer (Phosphate Solubilizing Bacteria (PSB), Azospirillum &Azotobacter) and bio-pesticides. He was also found to actively guide other farmers in adoption of new technologies. With his intervention they have started to grow different vegetable crops in a season in the village and as a result they are realizing better price in the market. He is also started growing other improved varieties like Brinjal: BNR-218, Chilli: BNR-206. Earlier Sri Birsa Oreya as a small time farmer used to bring his vegetables for sale at important markets of Khunti. Once he started growing in large scale and neighbouring vegetable vendors came to know about his produce and quality of the vegetable grown in the field of Sri Birsa Oreya. Hence the vendors come to his place and purchase the produce. He has also motivated other farmers in village and neighbouring village also. By adopting of different technologies he is now one of the successful farmers of the locality and is very well established and known farmer of the village and district. He is now a source of inspiration for all the other farmers of the locality who's are learning the things for improving their livelihood.
The key to his success seems to his eagerness to learn and understand very soon, hard work & positive attitude. He is a model rural youth for district and nearby areas.
Factors responsible for success (e.g., individual efforts, leadership qualities, innovativeness, and support form Govt. Department etc.) Individual efforts and innovativeness, leadrship

His family members include his mother, father, wife and two children. In addition he lives in a combined family with his four brothers and their family. His sister who is youngest among them is happily married in a well off family. Among 5 brothers & sisters, Sri Giri was bestowed with the responsibility of his family at a very younger age. The socio economic condition of Sri Giri did not allow him to continue his studies after intermediate. He had to do something to support his family to earn livelihood and honey production was the way out for him to reach his goal. Although, Farming was practiced by his family members for a long period but low production and low profit did not lure Sri Giri to try his hand in this field. The area was also having vast reach in farming but at a sustainable level only. The area was rich in natural resources which provoked Sri Giri to try something different. So, he decided honey production as there was not much competition in the area. But initially Sri Giri was unsuccessful in his endeavor due to Indian bees and lack of knowledge. But after getting success in honey production he has started integrated farming and owns honey processing unit today and a major supplier of honey in India. He also owns one orchard of guava and litchi admeasuring 2 ha. In this orchard he grows crops like ginger, turmeric, elephant foot yam and colocasia. He also grows paddy in 4 ha. of land every year and he is a major producer of cabbage and maize in his area. Thus, Sri Giri has become one of the biggest farmers in the state by adopting scientific techniques of farming. He is leading a good living, having new age farm mechanization, good schooling to his children and better life to his family members.
Write up on success story (about 500 words) After his initial failures, Sri Giri heard about training institute i.e. Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, Divyayan Krishi Vigyan Kendra situated at Morabadi, Ranchi where rural youth are trained in agriculture and allied subjects free of cost for self-reliance. He got himself enrolled for 45 days motivational programme at Divyayan Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Ranchi in 1997. Immediately after that Sri Giri took special training course of honey bee keeping from Divyayan KVK because honeybee keeping was his home business from long time and honey production with two boxes of Italian bees. But as it said, the road to success is not easy neither it was for Sri Giri. The production of honey was not upto satisfactory level and there were initial hiccups. But in those tuff times family members stood by side of Sri Giri and supported him through every thick and thin. They were the main strength of Sri Giri. And with passage of time Sri Giri learned even the minute details of honey production and took his business to new heights. To extend his learning and knowledge he completed master training course from Central Bee Research Training Centre, Pune in February 2012. Today he owns more than 300 boxes of honey bee and produces about 18000 kg of honey every year. To meet this level of production he moves his boxes to different places throughout the year as shown below :
  • Jan to Mar – Ara and Samastipur (in mustard field)
  • Mar to Apr – Bhagalpur (in litchi orchard)
  • Apr to May – Gumla, Simdega, Khunti
  • May to Sep – Ramgarh, Bero
  • Sep to Oct – Latehar (in maize field)
  • Oct to Dec – Gumla, Jaspur (in nizer field)

  • He is one of the main suppliers of honey to companies like Dabur & Kashmir Apiary. He not only sells honey but bee colony too and earns handsome profit. Sri Giri has also established a honey processing Unit in his village with the support of National Horticulture Mission. In this processing unit he processes honey from his own boxes and boxes of other farmers of nearby villages. He earns a handsome amount from this unit every year. Sri Giri has also advanced to next level of farming by adopting the integrated farming approach in which he grows vegetables, fruits, dairy farming etc. He utilizes the new techniques available in the field of farming, cattle rearing and other allied activities. The success story of Sri Giri does not end with his prosperity; rather his remarkable achievement has been that he has motivated more than thousand farmers of different districts for adoption of scientific methods of farming, bee keeping, cattle rearing etc. He has imparted honey production training to more than 600 farmers and among these 200 farmers has become self-reliant in their lives. With the support of NABARD he has formed a producers' group of 20 farmers comprising of 10 farmers from his own village and 10 farmers from neighboring villages. The main activity of this group is honey production. Sri Giri is also the state and district level resource person for honey bee keeping. In true sense he is a role model for many young and energetic farmers who wish to excel in their life.
